Composition – Framing Your Story
By now we’ve talked about light, exposure, focus, and depth of field.
Now it’s time to talk about how you place things inside the frame.
A good photo isn’t just about sharpness or settings.
It’s about where you put your subject — and how you guide the viewer’s eye.
🎯 1. Rule of Thirds
Imagine your frame divided into 9 equal boxes (like a tic-tac-toe grid).
Place your subject:
- On one of the lines
- Or where two lines intersect
This usually feels more natural than putting everything dead center.
👉 Try this: Turn on the grid in your camera settings.
➡️ 2. Leading Lines
Lines guide the eye through your image.
Examples:
- Roads
- Fences
- Rivers
- Tree lines
- Shadows
Use them to lead the viewer toward your subject.
🪟 3. Framing
Use elements in the scene to frame your subject:
- Windows
- Doorways
- Tree branches
- Archways
This adds depth and makes your subject feel more intentional.
🌫 4. Negative Space
Sometimes less is more.
Leaving empty space:
- Makes your subject stand out
- Creates mood
- Feels calm and powerful
This works beautifully in wildlife, portraits, and minimalist scenes.
📌 Your Challenge This Week:
Take one subject and photograph it:
- Centered
- Using rule of thirds
- With leading lines
- With negative space
