Why Your Photos Look Soft Even When Focus Is Correct
If your camera did focus correctly but the photo still looks soft, this is usually why.
1️⃣ Sharp focus ≠ sharp photo
Focus only decides where sharpness should be.
Sharpness can still be lost because of:
- camera movement
- subject movement
- depth of field that’s too shallow
2️⃣ Camera shake (most common cause)
When you hold a camera, your hands always move a little.
If your shutter speed is too slow, that movement shows up as softness.
Beginner rule:
- Handheld photos usually need 1/125 sec or faster
- Longer lenses need even faster speeds
3️⃣ Subject movement
Even if you are steady, your subject might not be.
People, animals, leaves, kids — they all move.
If they move during the exposure → softness.
Faster shutter speed fixes this.
4️⃣ Depth of field surprises
Wide apertures (like f/1.8) give very thin focus.
That means:
- eyes sharp, nose soft
- face sharp, ears soft
Nothing is broken — depth of field is just shallow.
🔍 Key takeaway
Soft photos are usually caused by movement or depth of field, not bad focus.
