Lesson 14 in Photography 101
Manual Mode – Taking Full Control
Up to now, your camera has been helping you.
Manual Mode (M) is where you make the decisions.
You control:
- Aperture
- Shutter Speed
- ISO
No guessing. No automatic adjustments.
🎛 What Manual Mode Really Means
Manual doesn’t mean “hard.”
It means:
You decide how bright the image is
You decide how motion looks
You decide depth of field
Your camera only shows you a light meter to guide you.
📏 The Exposure Meter
When you look through the viewfinder or at the screen, you’ll see a scale:
- “0” = balanced exposure
- “–” = darker
- “+” = brighter
You adjust your settings until the marker is where you want it.
But remember…
“0” isn’t always correct.
Snow should be brighter.
Night should be darker.
Manual mode gives you creative freedom.
🔁 Simple Way to Start Using Manual
Step 1: Set your aperture (depth of field you want).
Step 2: Set your shutter speed (freeze or blur motion).
Step 3: Raise or lower ISO until exposure looks correct.
That’s it.
🦌 Real-World Example (Wildlife)
If you’re shooting wildlife:
- Shutter: 1/1000 (freeze movement)
- Aperture: f/5.6 (subject separation)
- ISO: Adjust until properly exposed
Now your exposure won’t change just because the background changes.
Huge advantage.
🧠 Why Manual Is Powerful
• Consistent exposures
• Better control in difficult light
• No surprise changes mid-shot
• More confidence as a photographer
It’s where beginners start becoming intentional.
📌 Challenge
Switch to Manual Mode this week.
